Previously: When an arrogant young doctor mistakes a modestly dressed elderly man for a lost patient and tries to throw him out, he learns a brutal lesson about power and humility.

The Price of Arrogance

Charles felt the room spin. The receptionist's jaw dropped as she scrambled to stand up, bowing her head slightly. "Mr. Vance," she stammered, "we didn't know you were arriving today."

Marcus Vance was indeed the billionaire philanthropist who had quietly acquired St. Jude's medical network just three months prior. He rarely made public appearances, preferring to observe his institutions incognito to see how they truly operated. Today, he had seen more than enough.

Charles tried to swallow the lump in his throat. He forced an awkward, trembling laugh, attempting to salvage his dignity.

"Mr. Vance, please. I... I was merely joking. We have strict security protocols, and I was only ensuring the safety of our high-profile patients. Surely you can understand that."

Marcus closed his leather portfolio with a sharp snap that echoed through the quiet lobby.

"Do not insult my intelligence, Dr. Charles," Marcus said, his voice cold as ice. "You did not care about security. You cared about status. You saw a man in a simple cardigan and assumed he was beneath your notice. This cardigan was knitted by my late wife, and it is worth more to me than your entire career."

By now, the Chief of Medicine, Dr. Sarah Jenkins, had rushed down the elevator, alerted by a panicked page. She took one look at Marcus's stern expression and Charles's pale face and knew something had gone horribly wrong.

Marcus turned to Dr. Jenkins. "Dr. Charles is suspended immediately for two weeks without pay. Following his suspension, he is to be transferred to the Eastside Community Clinic. He will serve there for six months under supervision."

Charles gasped. The Eastside Clinic was a chaotic, underfunded public facility in the poorest part of the city. To a surgeon of his self-proclaimed caliber, it was a death sentence for his social standing.

"You can't do this!" Charles pleaded, his arrogance briefly flaring up again. "I am the top surgeon here! The patients come for me!"
"Then they will have to wait," Marcus replied flatly. "And if you refuse, your license will be reviewed by the board."
