The silence in the lobby became deafening. Dr. Michael stared at the man who had walked out on their family fifteen years ago, leaving his mother to struggle through a terminal illness alone. Michael had sworn he would never forgive him. He had buried his grief, poured his life into medicine, and built a wall around his heart. Now, that very man was standing before him, begging for help in the middle of his own hospital.

Anger flared up in Michael's chest, hot and suffocating. He wanted to demand answers, to scream at the man who had abandoned him. But Lily's weak whimper broke the tension. The little girl collapsed against Arthur's legs, her eyes fluttering shut as her fever raged. Professional duty instantly overrode Michael's personal resentment.

"Get her to Trauma Room Three, immediately!" Michael shouted to a nearby nurse, scooping the limp child into his arms.

Arthur tried to follow, but Michael blocked him with a cold, stern gaze that cut deeper than any words.

"You stay here," Michael said, his voice dripping with ice. "I am saving her because I am a doctor. But do not think this changes anything between us."

As Lily was hooked up to monitors, Michael worked feverishly with his team. Her temperature was skyrocketing, a severe case of untreated pneumonia that had progressed to a critical stage. While the medical team stabilized her, Michael stepped out into the hallway, where Arthur was pacing, holding his head in his hands. The old man looked broken, a shadow of the strong father Michael remembered.

"Why did you come to my hospital, Arthur?" Michael asked, refusing to call him dad. "And whose child is that?"

Arthur looked up, his eyes hollow. "She's your sister Sarah's daughter, Michael. Sarah passed away last year. I've been raising Lily alone. I didn't know you worked here until I saw your name on the board today. I had nowhere else to go. I'm broke, Michael. I spent everything on Sarah's treatments."
