Previously: When Dr. Michael stepped in to stop a ruthless security guard from throwing a penniless old man and a sick little child out of the hospital, he never expected to face his own past.

Unearthing a Painful Past

The silence between the two men was deafening, punctuated only by Lily's weak coughing. Dr. Michael immediately commanded the nursing staff to take the little girl to a private examination room. Once she was safely in the hands of the medical team, Michael ushered his father into his private office, closing the door to shut out the whispering staff.

For fifteen years, Michael had believed his father had abandoned him. After his mother’s tragic passing from a long illness, Arthur had vanished without a trace, leaving a teenage Michael to survive on academic scholarships and the charity of relatives. Michael’s grief had curdled into a deep, burning resentment that fueled his drive to become a successful doctor.

"Why are you here, Arthur? And where have you been for fifteen years?"

Michael asked, his voice trembling with a mixture of anger and betrayal. He couldn't bring himself to call him 'Dad' again. Arthur sat heavily in a chair, burying his face in his rough hands.

"I never wanted to leave you, Michael. After your mother died, the medical bills were astronomical. I took loans from dangerous people to keep us afloat and pay for your first year of pre-med,"

Arthur explained, his voice thick with emotion. He looked up, his eyes begging for understanding.

"When they threatened your life, I had no choice. I took a fall for a crime I didn't commit just to pay off the debt and keep those monsters away from you. I spent twelve years in prison. By the time I got out, you were a successful doctor. I was ashamed, dirty, and broke. I didn't want to ruin your life."

Michael stared at his father, his chest heaving as the foundation of his entire life's anger began to crumble. He realized his father hadn't abandoned him; he had sacrificed his own freedom to protect him. Suddenly, a nurse knocked frantically on the office door.

"Dr. Michael, come quickly! Lily's oxygen levels are dropping rapidly!"
