Doctor Turns Away Poor Grandfather Only to Realize He Is His Estranged Father
Previously: When Dr. Michael Vance stepped in to save a penniless grandfather and his sick granddaughter from being thrown out of his clinic, he never expected to face his long-lost father.
Ghosts of the Past
The silence in the lobby became suffocating. Fifteen years of unresolved anger, unanswered questions, and deep-seated pain rushed back to Michael in an instant. When Michael was just a teenager, his father, Arthur, had walked out on the family, leaving them to struggle. Michael had worked tirelessly to build his successful medical career, fueled by the bitter desire to prove he didn't need the father who had abandoned him. And now, that very man stood before him, dressed in tattered clothes, begging for charity.
"You have no right to show up here," Michael said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sorrow. "After all these years, you come to my clinic?"
"Michael, please," Arthur cried, holding the limp form of Lily close. "Hate me all you want. Punish me later. But please, save my granddaughter. She is all I have left."
As if on cue, Lily's eyes rolled back, and she collapsed into Arthur's arms. The physician in Michael overrode the hurt son. He immediately scooped the little girl into his arms and rushed her into the emergency treatment room, leaving his father to wait in the lobby, consumed by anxiety.
For the next three hours, Michael and his medical team worked frantically. Lily was suffering from severe, acute appendicitis that had begun to rupture. Any further delay would have been fatal. As Michael carefully stitched the incision, he looked at the little girl's face. She had his mother's eyes. This was his nieceβthe daughter of his late sister, whom he had also lost touch with after the family fractured.
When Michael finally emerged from the operating room, he found Arthur slumped in a chair, weeping silently. Michael walked over, his anger softened by the exhausting ordeal, but his heart still guarded.
"She's stable. She's going to make a full recovery," Michael said quietly.
Arthur let out a sob of pure relief, falling to his knees. "Thank you, Michael. Thank you."
