Previously: A bitter feud between two doctors erupts as one saves a dying boy with a rustic antidote, exposing the other's arrogance and the deadly secret lurking in the harbor.

The Bitter Taste of Defeat

With unflinching resolve, Tommy Vance ignored Courtney Sterling’s panicked plea. His movements were a blur of clinical precision, his hands steady despite the high-stakes drama unfolding. He located Julian’s IV catheter port and, with authentic hydraulic velocity, drove the needle home. The brass plunger depressed smoothly, injecting the amber antidote. Instantly, Julian’s body arched in a massive, shuddering gasp. Air, vital and life-giving, flooded his lungs, and a healthy pink color rushed across his cyanotic lips, chasing away the deathly blue.

"Heart rhythm stabilized. The neurotoxin is neutralized."

Vance’s voice was calm, lethal in its composure. He had done what the esteemed Dr. Sterling could not. Sterling stood in jaw-slackened disbelief, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard against the bitter pill of his own humiliating defeat. The arrogant city physician, so quick to judge the “backwoods quack,” had been utterly outmatched.

Vance rose to his full, towering height. His heavy, mud-caked boot slammed down onto the timber plank, mere inches from Sterling’s polished Italian shoe, the wet, heavy thud a punctuation mark in the tense silence. He backed Sterling against the dripping, rusted ship chains, a silent but powerful assertion of dominance. Sterling wilted under the force of Vance’s gaze, the shadows of the tavern seeming to swallow him whole.

"Next time you look at my boots, Sterling, remember they're the only reason he's alive."

Sterling’s lower lip trembled, his eyes welling with bitter, humiliated tears. The governor's son was alive, thanks to the very man he had so readily scorned. The docks held secrets, and tonight, one of them had nearly claimed a life, only to be vanquished by the knowledge forged in the very earth Sterling so despised. The storm outside began to subside, leaving behind the quiet, profound weight of consequence and a stark reminder that true skill often lies not in polish, but in purpose.
