Previously: Standing in the pouring rain outside a luxury hotel, eighteen-year-old Liam confronts an elegant woman stepping from her limousine, holding a wet photograph that unravels a lifetime of devastating family lies.

The Unraveling of a Lie

Victoria stared at the rain-damaged photograph. It was a picture of her as a young teenager, holding a newborn baby in a hospital room she had spent fifteen years trying to forget. The color drained from her face, leaving her as pale as the marble columns behind her. The security guards rushed forward to intervene, but Victoria raised a trembling hand, halting them. She looked at Liam, really looked at him, recognizing the same copper hair and piercing green eyes that stared back at her in the mirror every morning.

"Liam..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring thunder. "How did you find me?"

Liam let out a bitter, hollow laugh. He explained that Helen, the woman who had raised him as his mother, had passed away in a sterile hospital ward just two days ago. In her final hours, riddled with guilt and poverty, Helen had handed him the photograph and told him the truth. Victoria hadn't just abandoned her sister; she had abandoned her own son to secure her place in high society.

"She begged you for help when she was sick, and you ignored her!" Liam yelled, his heartbreak laid bare. "You let her die thinking she was a failure, while you lived in luxury!"

Victoria pulled him into the sheltered alcove of the hotel entrance, desperate to escape the prying eyes of the onlookers. Tears finally spilled from her eyes, ruining her flawless makeup. She shook her head desperately, trying to find the words to explain a lifetime of coerced silence.

"It wasn’t like that, Liam," Victoria pleaded, her voice cracking. "I was fifteen when you were born. My parents—your grandparents—threatened to put me in an institution and put you up for closed adoption. Helen saved us. She took you so I could still see you. But they forced me to sign papers, and they cut Helen off when she tried to tell me how bad things had gotten. I never knew she was dying. I swear to you, they hid her letters!"

I swear to you, they hid her letters!"
