I Dropped My Deceased Wife’s Photo, and a Little Girl Claimed She Was Alive
Previously: When Richard dropped a precious photo of his late wife, a young girl picked it up and claimed the woman was her living mother, leading to a chilling discovery.
The House in the Shadows
Richard blinked, and the supernatural red hue in the girl’s eyes was gone, replaced by the normal, innocent brown of a child. He tried to convince himself it was a trick of the flickering halogen streetlights, but his hands wouldn't stop shaking. Desperate for answers, he knelt down to her level.
“Where is your mother, sweetie? What is her name?” Richard asked, his voice a breathless plea.
“Her name is Clara. She’s at home, waiting for me,” the girl replied, pointing toward a dark, winding alleyway. “I’m Grace.”
Clara. The name struck Richard like a physical blow. Without another word, he followed Grace as she led him through the maze of old brick streets. The air grew progressively colder, smelling of damp earth and decaying leaves. Finally, they stopped before a secluded, gothic-style Victorian house hidden behind overgrown iron gates.
Grace pushed the creaking gate open and led him up the wooden porch steps. The front door was unlocked. Inside, the house was dimly lit, smelling faintly of lavender and old paper—the exact scent Clara used to wear. Richard’s heart leaped into his throat. He followed Grace into the hallway, his eyes scanning the dusty portraits on the walls.
“Mommy! I’m home! I brought a friend,” Grace called out.
Slow, hesitant footsteps echoed from the second floor. Richard held his breath, staring up at the winding staircase. A woman stepped into the warm glow of the landing light, wearing a knitted shawl. When she looked down and met Richard’s gaze, she gasped, dropping the book she held. It tumbled down the stairs, landing at Richard’s feet.
It was Clara. She looked older, paler, and her eyes were filled with a mixture of terror and sorrow. She was alive.
Before Richard could move, a heavy hand gripped his shoulder. He spun around to face a tall, stern man in a dark suit who had just entered from the back door. Beside him, Grace stood with a cold, knowing smile, her eyes flashing red once more.
