The Ivy-Covered Cottage

The world seemed to tilt on its axis. William's heart hammered against his ribs as he followed the little girl, Grace, down the winding, sun-dappled path. Every instinct told him this was a cruel trick, a hallucination born of a broken heart. Yet, those emerald eyes haunted him. They were Sarah's eyes, living and breathing in the face of this child.

They stopped in front of a small, ivy-covered cottage tucked away at the end of the lane. Grace pushed open the creaking wooden gate and ran up the stone steps. Before she could reach the door, it swung open. A woman stepped out, carrying a basket of freshly washed linens. She wore her hair in a loose bun, a simple dress draped over her slender frame.

William froze. The breath caught in his throat. It was her. It was Sarah.

The wicker basket slipped from her fingers, sending the white sheets tumbling onto the grass. Sarah's eyes widened in absolute shock, her hands flying to her mouth as she stared at the man standing at her gate.

"William?" she whispered, her voice trembling. "Is it really you?"

Before William could speak, before he could cross the threshold to hold the woman he thought was dead, the harsh screech of tires shattered the silence. A sleek, black SUV pulled up to the curb. The door slammed shut, and a tall man in an immaculate, dark suit stepped out. It was Arthur, Sarah’s billionaire father—the man who had always despised William and vowed to tear them apart.

"What are you doing here?" Arthur roared, his face contorted in fury. "Get away from my daughter!"

Sarah rushed forward, pulling Grace behind her. Her eyes pleaded with William, filled with a sudden, overwhelming terror.

"Please, William, you have to leave!" she cried. "He will ruin you!"

Arthur stepped between them, his eyes cold. He leaned in, whispering a dark threat. Nine years ago, he had faked Sarah's death in a tragic accident, telling Sarah that William had taken a massive payoff to abandon her. He had kept them separated by a wall of absolute lies, and now, he was prepared to do whatever it took to keep the secret buried.
