A Shocking Deposit

The morning sun streamed through the high, arched windows of the First National Bank, casting a warm glow over the polished grey concrete floors. Rachel, a senior teller known for her warm smile and sharp eye, was organizing her station. It was a typical, slow Tuesday morning until the heavy glass doors swung open, and a tiny figure stepped inside. A young boy, around eight years old, walked purposefully toward her counter. He wore a slightly faded yellow t-shirt, dusty sneakers, and carried a heavy, olive-green canvas bag that seemed almost too large for him to lift.

Rachel smiled warmly, leaning over the counter to address the young visitor. "Hello sweetheart, are you here with an adult?" she asked, expecting him to point toward a parent waiting near the entrance.

But the boy shook his head. He hoisted the heavy canvas bag onto the counter with a quiet grunt, unzipped it, and looked directly into her eyes with a seriousness that seemed far too mature for his age.

"No ma'am, I came alone. I want to open a savings account," Mason said.

Rachel’s friendly smile instantly froze. As the zipper slid back, she didn't see a handful of allowance money or copper coins. Instead, her eyes widened in absolute shock. The bag was packed to the brim with neat, thick stacks of crisp hundred-dollar bills, bound tightly by professional bank bands. Her breath caught in her throat, and her heart began to hammer against her ribs.

"Oh my god," Rachel gasped, her voice barely a whisper as she stared at the small fortune. "Where did this money come from?"

The boy looked around the empty lobby, his shoulders tense. "It was my dad's," he whispered. "My mom is very sick, and I need to save her." Rachel knew she had to act quickly, but she had no idea that this small boy was about to unlock a dark secret that had haunted the bank for nearly a decade.
