An Eight-Year-Old Girl Walked Into My Bakery Holding My Stolen Daughter's Locket
Previously: When eight-year-old Chloe walked into Hannah's bakery holding a photo of a baby wearing a familiar gold locket, a devastating eight-year-old secret began to unravel.
The Confession in the Tin
Hannah’s knees buckled, and she had to grip the edge of the wooden counter to keep from falling. She rushed out from behind the register, her sage green dress rustling, and quickly locked the front door of the bakery. She flipped the sign to "Closed" and guided the little girl to a quiet booth near the back.
"What is your name?"Hannah asked, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
"Chloe,"the girl replied, her voice barely audible. She placed the photograph on the table between them.
"Chloe, where did you get this picture? And where did you get that locket?"Hannah pleaded, tears welling in her eyes. Eight years ago, Hannah had been told her newborn daughter had passed away in the hospital due to sudden complications. The only thing she had left of her child was the matching half of the custom locket she had commissioned before the birth.
Chloe reached into the oversized pocket of her denim jacket and pulled out a folded piece of notebook paper.
"My mommy gave it to me before she had to go to sleep in the hospital last week,"Chloe said, her lower lip trembling.
"She told me she was going away to heaven. She told me to take this paper and find the lady who owns the sweet shop on Elm Street. She said I belonged to you."
With shaking hands, Hannah unfolded the paper. The handwriting was instantly recognizable. It belonged to Clara, Hannah’s former best friend and sister-in-law, who had suddenly moved across the country the exact week Hannah’s baby was pronounced dead. As Hannah read the tear-stained words, a horrifying truth began to unravel. Clara had never been pregnant; she had bribed a corrupt nurse to fake the death of Hannah's baby, taking the healthy newborn girl for herself out of a desperate, twisted jealousy.
