Previously: When a wealthy socialite forcibly snatches a silver locket from a young woman in an upscale jewelry store, the elderly owner recognizes the heirloom, unraveling a decades-old family secret.
A Shocking Alignment
Victoria let out a sharp, nervous laugh, trying to regain her composure. "Don't be ridiculous, Arthur," she sneered, crossing her arms. "This girl is obviously a con artist who found that piece of junk in a trash bin. She's trying to swindle you out of your money."
But Arthur wasn't listening. Ignoring Victoria entirely, he reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a small, worn velvet pouch. With trembling fingers, he tipped its contents onto the counter. It was another half of a silver heart, identical in design and wear to the one Victoria had snatched from Lily. Arthur gently slid the two pieces together. With a soft click, the lockets joined perfectly. On the reverse side, the split engraving aligned to spell out the name "Evelyn."
"My daughter,"Arthur choked out, tears spilling down his wrinkled cheeks. He looked up at Lily, searching her face.
"Your mother... what was her name? Where is she?"
"Her name was Sarah,"Lily replied, her voice barely a whisper.
"She passed away last month. She spent her whole life hiding, always afraid of someone finding us. She never told me who my father or grandfather was, only that this locket would guide me home."
Arthur stared at Lily, his gaze dropping to her shoulder.
"Evelyn had a daughter with a small, star-shaped birthmark on her left collarbone,"he murmured. Lily slowly pulled aside the collar of her oversized cardigan, revealing the exact mark. Arthur gasped, but before he could embrace his long-lost granddaughter, Victoria lunged forward. Realizing that Lilyβs return would strip her family of the inheritance they had claimed after Evelyn's disappearance, Victoria snatched the combined locket off the counter. "This is a lie! I won't let some street rat steal what belongs to us!" she shrieked, running toward the exit.
βshe shrieked, running toward the exit.
