The Rainy Night Encounter

The cold autumn rain beat mercilessly against the glass of Arthur's antique jewelry shop. Inside, the warm glow of vintage lamps offered a stark contrast to the bleak Oregon evening. Arthur, an elderly jeweler wearing his signature dark sweater vest and protective apron, was preparing to close up for the night. He sighed, rubbing his tired eyes, when the little brass bell above the door chimed.

A young woman stumbled in, shivering. Her shoulder-length blonde hair was damp, clinging to her cheeks, and her canvas jacket was dark with rainwater. She looked pale, exhausted, and deeply distressed. In her trembling hand, she clutched a small object.

"How much will you give me for this necklace?" she asked, her voice cracking with desperation.

Arthur took the gold locket from her hand. It was worn, its surface scratched from years of use, but it was solid gold. As a businessman, he had to keep his margins, but looking at the girl's desperate eyes, he felt a pang of sympathy. He inspected the piece briefly.

"I'll give you fifty, not more," Arthur said gently.
"Okay, deal," Clara replied instantly, barely waiting for him to count out the bills.

She snatched the cash, mumbling a quick thank you, and turned to leave. Arthur watched her go, then looked down at the locket. Out of professional habit, he pried open the delicate clasp to check the condition of the interior hinges. His breath caught in his throat. Staring back at him from the faded photograph was a little girl with bright blue eyes and a distinctive star-shaped birthmark on her shoulder. His heart hammered against his ribs.

Arthur rushed out from behind the counter, ignoring his stiff knees. He caught the door just as she was stepping out into the rain.

"That necklace... It belongs to my daughter! My missing daughter... Clara?" he pleaded, his voice trembling.

The young woman froze on the wet pavement, turning back to face him with a look of absolute shock.
