Previously: When a desperate young woman walks into a jewelry store to sell a gold locket, the elderly owner opens it and makes a heart-stopping discovery that changes their lives forever.

The Mark of the Past

Clara pulled back, her eyes wide with fear and confusion. She looked at the elderly jeweler as if he had lost his mind. The shop was silent save for the ticking of dozens of clocks and the heavy patter of rain outside. She clutched her damp hoodie tightly around herself, stepping back toward the rain-streaked window.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Clara stammered, her voice shaking. "I bought that locket at a thrift store years ago. Please, just give me my fifty dollars or give me my necklace back."

But Arthur was weeping openly now. He held the open locket out to her with a trembling hand, pointing to the tiny, faded photograph inside.

"This is my daughter, Clara. She disappeared from the park down the street when she was only six years old. I searched for her for years. I never stopped looking."

Clara looked at the photo. The little girl in the picture did look strikingly like her, but she shook her head.

"My name is Clara, yes, but this is just a coincidence. My parents raised me in Oregon. They passed away last year."

Arthur stepped closer, his eyes scanning her face with a desperate intensity.

"Clara, look at the photo. Look at her left wrist. She has a small, crescent-shaped birthmark. Do you have that birthmark?"

The air in the room grew cold. Clara felt a chill run down her spine. Slowly, with trembling fingers, she pulled back the sleeve of her wet green hoodie. There, on her left wrist, was a faint, crescent-shaped scar-like birthmark. She had been told it was from a childhood accident, but she had always known it was there. She stared at it, her mind racing as a torrent of questions flooded her thoughts. Could this stranger really be her father? Was her entire life a lie?
