Previously: When Arthur brutally attacked an elderly woman in a glass atrium, he thought he was silencing his past. He had no idea who she really was.

A Whistleblower's Gamble

As the paramedics arrived to treat Martha's superficial cuts, Officer John secured the crime scene. He was baffled by the sheer brutality of the attack. Why would a high-ranking executive like Arthur risk his entire career and freedom to publicly beat an elderly woman? The answer lay in Martha's true identity. She was not a random passerby, nor was she a defenseless grandmother. Martha was a legendary retired forensic accountant who had spent the last three decades exposing corporate fraud. She had recently been hired secretly by Vanguard's board of directors to investigate Arthur's suspicious offshore transactions.

Just hours before the attack, Martha had successfully uncovered a massive embezzlement scheme totaling over forty million dollars. Arthur had realized his empire was crumbling and had tracked Martha to the atrium, desperate to retrieve the physical drive containing the incriminating ledgers. He believed that by destroying the drive and silencing Martha, his secrets would remain buried forever. When he attacked her, he managed to snatch her leather handbag, thinking he had won the ultimate prize.

"He took the bag, Officer," Martha whispered, her voice raspy but firm. "He thinks he has the evidence. He thinks he destroyed me."

Officer John looked concerned, realizing that without the evidence, prosecuting a powerful man like Arthur would be incredibly difficult. However, Martha let out a soft, wheezing laugh that turned into a cough. She slowly opened her wrinkled hand to reveal a tiny, metallic object. It was a micro-SD card, tightly clutched in her palm. The handbag Arthur had stolen was nothing but a decoy filled with useless papers. The real evidence was safe, but the danger was far from over. Arthur was still loose in the building, and once he realized he had been tricked, he would return to finish the job.
