Previously: When a kind-hearted waitress offers a free bowl of stew to a penniless elderly woman, she receives a folded note that uncovers a shocking family secret hidden for decades.

A Dark Secret Uncovered

The moment Arthur retreated to his back office to count the daily register, Rachel ducked behind the counter and feverishly unfolded the note. The handwriting was elegant yet shaky, written with an urgency that made Rachel’s breath hitch in her throat.

"Rachel, the man you call your boss is a thief. Thirty years ago, he stole this diner from your grandfather through blackmail and forgery. I am your grandmother, Margaret. He threatened to ruin our family if I ever contacted you, but I could not watch you suffer under his thumb any longer. Look beneath the loose floorboard in his office. The truth is hidden there."

Rachel gasped, her mind reeling. She had always been told that her grandfather lost the diner in a bad business deal, a tragedy that had plunged her family into generations of poverty. Could her cruel boss really be behind it all? She knew she had to find out.

That night, after the diner closed, Arthur left Rachel to lock up. Heart pounding, she crept into his dark, locked office using the spare key. She searched the floor near his heavy oak desk until her fingers brushed against a loose wooden floorboard near the filing cabinet. Prying it open with a metal spatula, she discovered an old, dusty metal box.

Inside were black-and-white photographs of her mother as a little girl standing proudly in front of the diner, alongside the original deed of ownership bearing her grandfather's signature. But right beneath it lay a forged transfer document signed by Arthur. Her family's entire legacy had been stolen.

Suddenly, the overhead light flickered on, casting a harsh glow across the room. Rachel spun around, her blood turning to ice. Arthur stood in the doorway, a menacing sneer twisting his face as he stared at the box in her hands.

"You shouldn't have been snooping, Rachel," he hissed, stepping inside and locking the door behind him. "Give me the box, or things will get very ugly for you."
