The Secret of the Calder Family

The aftermath of the collapse was a whirlwind. Security and medical staff rushed into the ballroom, sweeping Eleanor away to her private study upstairs. Sarah was immediately pulled aside by the catering manager, who threatened to fire her on the spot for "causing a scene." However, before she could be escorted out, Eleanor's personal assistant intervened. With a pale face, the assistant insisted that Sarah must accompany them upstairs immediately.

When Sarah entered the lavishly decorated study, she found Eleanor sitting on a velvet sofa, sipping water from a crystal glass. The older woman looked fragile, stripped of her formidable high-society armor. As the door closed, leaving them alone, Eleanor looked up at Sarah, tears welling in her eyes.

"Please, sit down," Eleanor said, her voice cracking. "I need to look at you."

Sarah remained standing, clutching her jade pendant protectively. "Why did my mother's name shock you so much? Do you know her?"

Eleanor let out a bitter, emotional laugh. "Do I know her? Marion is my daughter, Sarah. My only daughter."

Sarah felt the room spin. Her mother, who had spent her life working double shifts in a small diner to raise Sarah in a cramped apartment, was the daughter of this billionaire matriarch? It made no sense.

"Thirty years ago, Marion fell in love with a man of whom my late husband and I did not approve," Eleanor explained, her voice thick with regret. "He was a mechanic, a man we deemed beneath our family's social standing. I gave Marion an ultimatum: leave him, or be cut off from the family fortune forever."

Eleanor reached out, her hand shaking as she pointed to the green jade. "That pendant was my mother's. I gave it to Marion on her eighteenth birthday. When she chose love over our wealth, she threw it back at me. I thought she hated me so much she had discarded it forever. But she kept it. And now... she gave it to you."
