Julian smoothed his rumpled black suit, his shock quickly turning back into arrogant malice. He scoffed, looking down his nose at Arthur. "You think this old man can save you, Clara?" Julian sneered, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket. "I have the best lawyers in the state. Before we separated, you signed the medical proxy and financial disclosure. Because I cut off your insurance weeks ago, you cannot afford this hospital stay. Under our separation clause, if you default on medical debt, temporary custody of any offspring defaults to me. I am taking my son, and there is nothing either of you can do about it."
Clara felt the room spin. Julian had planned this cruelty down to the very last detail. He had intentionally left her financially vulnerable just to exact his revenge and claim the child as a pawn for his family's trust fund. She looked at her father, tears streaming down her face. "Dad, is it true? Can he take Leo?" she whispered in despair.
Arthur stood up slowly, his grey blazer hanging loosely on his shoulders, but his posture was rigid and unyielding. He looked at Julian with deep disgust. "You underestimate a father's love, Julian," Arthur said quietly. "I may have been absent from Clara's life, but I never stopped watching over her. I knew what kind of monster you were. That's why I sold my business last week. The funds cleared this morning."
Arthur reached into his pocket and produced a certified cashier's check, fully covering Clara's medical expenses and securing a retainer for the top family lawyer in the city. Julian's smirk began to fade, replaced by a sudden, nervous twitch. But Arthur wasn't finished. He reached into his blazer pocket and pulled out his phone, which was actively recording. "I also have you on tape committing physical assault in a restricted hospital ward, threatening a postpartum mother, and admitting to financial sabotage. Do you want to see how a judge views that?"
