My Ex Left Our Daughter on a Frozen Porch for Her New Boyfriend
Previously: When Caleb arrived to pick up his five-year-old daughter, he found her freezing on the dark porch while his ex-wife and her new boyfriend were locked inside.
The Dark Truth Behind the Locked Door
Caleb rubbed Lily's freezing hands, trying to bring the warmth back into her shivering limbs while staring up at the couple on the stairs. Ashley scrambled down the steps, her hands trembling as she reached out. "Caleb, please, itβs not what it looks like! We thought she was in her room sleeping!" she pleaded, her voice shaking.
"She was outside, Ashley! The door was locked from the inside!" Caleb roared, holding Lily tighter. Lily whimpered, burying her wet face into her father's neck. Caleb looked past Ashley at Brandon, who was now leaning against the banister with a defensive, arrogant smirk. "You have nothing to say, Brandon? You locked my daughter out?"
Brandon shrugged, his voice dripping with indifference. "Kid was running around making noise. I told her to play on the enclosed back porch. I didn't know she wandered out front. Besides, she's fine."
The realization hit Caleb like a physical blow. Brandon had intentionally locked the five-year-old out of the main house because she was "bothering" them, and Ashley, blinded by her infatuation, had allowed it. When Caleb demanded to know how long she had been out there, Ashley couldn't even answer. Her glazed eyes and slurred speech revealed another dark truth: she was under the influence of the heavy sleeping pills Brandon had given her.
"You let this man lock our daughter in the freezing cold so you two could be alone?" Caleb whispered, his anger turning into cold, hard resolve. "I am calling the police. Right now."
Ashley panicked, begging Caleb not to call the authorities, claiming it would ruin her life. But Caleb had already made up his mind. He walked out into the winter night, carrying his daughter to the safety of his truck, leaving his ex-wife screaming in the snow.
