Previously: Ethan Walker never trusted strangers, but when his loyal German Shepherd befriended a pregnant woman on the road, he let her stay. Now, her past is about to destroy the peace he built.

The Man From Her Past Arrives

It was a Thursday afternoon when a black truck tore up the gravel drive, kicking dust into the air. Ethan set down his tools and walked toward the gate, Ranger at his side. A man stepped out—tall, sharp suit, with eyes that held no warmth. He looked at Ethan and said, "Where is she?"

"Who?"

"My wife. Sarah. I know she's here."

Ethan felt his blood go cold. "You've got the wrong place."

The man pulled a folded document from his jacket and shoved it into Ethan's hands. "My name is Daniel Reeves. I have a court order naming me the legal father of her unborn child. She abandoned our home, and I have the right to take her back."

Ethan scanned the paper. It looked official, stamped with a judge's signature. His heart pounded, but he kept his face calm. "She didn't mention a husband."

"She wouldn't. She's unstable, Ethan. She ran off in the middle of the night, took my car, my money. She's a liar and a thief."

Sarah came out of the house then, and the look on her face told Ethan everything. She was terrified. She stopped on the porch, her hand flying to her belly, and Ethan saw her eyes dart between him and Daniel.

"Don't listen to him," she said, her voice shaking. "He's lying."

Daniel laughed. "Lying? I have documents, Sarah. You have nothing."

Ranger growled, a low, dangerous sound. The dog stepped forward, placing himself between Sarah and Daniel. Ethan put a hand on Ranger's collar, but he didn't pull him back.

"She's not going anywhere with you," Ethan said.

Daniel's smile vanished. "You're making a big mistake."

"Maybe," Ethan said. "But it's my mistake to make."

Daniel got back into his truck, but before he drove off, he leaned out the window. "I'll be back with the sheriff. And when I do, you'll regret this."

The truck disappeared down the road, and Ethan turned to Sarah. She was crying, silent tears streaming down her face. Her knees buckled, and Ethan caught her before she hit the ground.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I should have told you."

Ethan helped her inside and sat her down at the kitchen table. He poured her a glass of water and waited.

Sarah took a deep breath. "Daniel and I were married three years ago. He was charming at first, but after the wedding, he changed. He controlled everything—my money, my friends, even my phone. When I got pregnant, I thought it would soften him. Instead, he said a child would ruin his career. He wanted me to get rid of it."

Ethan's hands tightened into fists.

"I refused," Sarah continued. "So he locked me in the house. He said he would take the baby as soon as it was born and have me declared unfit. I waited until he left for a business trip, and I ran. I drove for two days until my car broke down, and then I walked."

"Why didn't you go to the police?"

"I did. But he has friends in high places. They said I was overreacting. They believed him."

Ethan sat back, his mind racing. He had seen men like Daniel before—men who used power and money to get what they wanted. He knew the system was not always on the side of the innocent.

"I'll help you," Ethan said. "I don't know how, but I will."

Sarah looked at him with a mixture of hope and doubt. "Why? You don't even know me."

"Because Ranger trusts you," Ethan said. "And that's good enough for me."

Ranger's Loyalty Tested

The next morning, Daniel returned with Sheriff Barnes, a man Ethan had known for years. The sheriff looked uncomfortable as he held up a piece of paper. "Ethan, I've got a court order to return Sarah to her husband."

Ethan stood in the doorway, arms crossed. "Sheriff, you know me. You know I wouldn't harbor a criminal. But this woman is pregnant and scared. She says her husband is abusive."

Sheriff Barnes sighed. "Ethan, the law is the law. I've known Daniel for years—he's a respected businessman."

"Respected by who?" Ethan asked.

Daniel stepped forward, his face red with anger. "You're interfering with a legal order. I'll have you arrested."

"For what?" Ethan said. "For offering shelter to a woman in need?"

Sarah came out, her face pale but determined. "I won't go back," she said. "He'll take my baby."

Daniel sneered. "You're unfit, Sarah. You're a liar, and you're a danger to that child."

Ranger growled again, a deep rumble that made Daniel take a step back. The dog moved to Sarah's side, pressing his body against her leg. It was a clear message: protect her.

Sheriff Barnes looked at the dog, then at Ethan, and his face softened. "Ethan, I know you've been through a lot. But I have a job to do."

"Then do it," Ethan said. "But if you take her, you'll be taking her from a safe home to a man who locked her up. You'll be handing a baby to a monster."

The sheriff hesitated. "I need more than your word."

Sarah spoke up. "I have proof. In my suitcase—there's a journal. I wrote down everything Daniel did. Dates, threats, the time he broke my phone. I have pictures of the bruises."

Daniel's face went white. "She's lying."

Sarah walked inside and returned with a worn notebook. She handed it to the sheriff. He flipped through the pages, his eyes widening. When he looked up, his expression had changed.

"Daniel," the sheriff said slowly, "this is serious. I'm going to need to take you in for questioning."

Daniel's composure cracked. "You're believing her? She's a manipulative—"

"I'm believing the evidence," the sheriff said. "Ethan, can you keep Sarah here for now?"

"She's safer here than anywhere," Ethan said.

The sheriff led Daniel away in handcuffs, and Sarah let out a trembling breath. She turned to Ethan, her eyes full of tears. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me yet," Ethan said. "He'll be back. Men like him always come back."

But as he watched Sarah cradle her belly, he knew he would do whatever it took to protect her and the child she carried.
