The Impossible Engine

The air inside the 80th-floor test lab of Apex Tech was thick with panic. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the glittering skyline of the city stretched out, indifferent to the crisis unfolding within. On a central lighted table sat the prototype of the Hyperion Quantum Engine, a dark, silent mass of metal. Twelve of the country’s most brilliant aerospace engineers stood around it, their faces pale and slick with sweat. They had worked for seventy-two hours straight, and they had failed. If the engine did not start by morning, the company would face bankruptcy.

Evelyn, the young and sharp-witted Chief Executive of Apex Tech, paced the room. Wearing a tailored charcoal grey suit, her blonde hair pulled back, she looked like a warrior on the verge of losing her empire. She turned to the exhausted team, her voice trembling with frustration. "Is there no one in this entire building who can make this work?" she demanded.

From the shadows near the doorway, a low voice responded. "I can fix it."

The engineers turned to see Robert, a rugged man with a short beard, wearing a grease-stained navy blue jumpsuit. He had been sweeping the floors just moments before. A collective sneer rippled through the room. One of the senior engineers laughed aloud, muttering, "He’s just a janitor, he can’t fix that."

Evelyn stepped closer, her eyes scanning the janitor's confident posture. Desperate and amused by his audacity, she scoffed.

"If you fix it when twelve engineers couldn't, I'll marry you."

It was meant to be a humiliating joke, but Robert didn't flinch. He looked directly into her eyes and replied, "I accept."

Walking to the table, Robert picked up a heavy wrench. But as he bent over the machinery, something extraordinary happened. He closed his eyes, and when he opened them, they flashed with a brilliant, glowing blue light. With precise, lightning-fast movements, he bypassed a hidden relay. Within seconds, the engine hummed, then roared to life with a flawless blue energy. The lab gasped in absolute shock.
