Previously: A grizzled foreman tried to strong-arm a young trainee into signing off on faulty safety equipment. He had no idea the trainee was more than he appeared, holding a secret that would bring him down.

The Rookie's Counterstrike

In a move too fast for the eye to truly follow, Mateo's left hand shot up. Instead of flinching, he intercepted Thorne’s descending wrist with a sickening, bone-jarring slap. The impact echoed in the sudden silence of the diner, punctuated only by the storm's fury. With a vicious, practiced torque, Mateo twisted Thorne’s arm, using the foreman’s own considerable weight against him. The 230-pound man crashed to the wet linoleum floor with a heavy thud, groaning in pain and disbelief.

"You don't run this line, Thorne. You endanger four hundred men to pocket safety bonuses."

Mateo’s voice was like chipped ice, each word precise and deadly. Thorne, pinned beneath the rookie’s surprisingly strong grip, could only gasp, his eyes wide with shock. Saliva welled at the corners of his lips as agony shot through his wrenched wrist. His chin quivered, his skin draining of color, a sickly gray pallor replacing his usual ruddy complexion.

Calmly, almost deliberately, Mateo slid his gloved right hand inside the heavy zipper of his grime-covered jumpsuit. He retrieved a sleek, black titanium executive pass, laser-etched with his name and title. He placed it deliberately on the wet tabletop, directly in Thorne’s field of vision. The words gleamed under the diner’s flickering lights: "MATEO VANCE - CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER".

"I spent three days on your floor. I saw every safety latch you welded shut."

Thorne’s Adam's apple bobbed in a desperate, dry swallow. His breath came in ragged gasps through flared nostrils. The raw terror in his eyes was palpable as he stared at the pass, then at the man he had threatened moments before. The storm outside seemed to intensify, mirroring the chaos unfolding within the small diner. The illusion of Thorne’s power had shattered, replaced by the stark reality of his own impending downfall.
