The towering gothic arches of St. Jude's Cathedral loomed against a bruised twilight sky, the air so cold it felt like shards of glass against the skin. Fine, powdery snow drifted, a silent ballet performed around frost-kissed floral urns. Flickering gas lanterns cast an eerie amber glow on the slick, arched entrance, their warmth a stark contrast to the biting sub-zero air. Amidst the muffled tolling of distant bells and the crunch of icy gravel, Brock Henderson, all of 29 years of arrogant entitlement, stood on the upper landing of the cathedral steps. His midnight-black tuxedo was immaculate, his slicked-back hair and sharp jawline radiating a cruel, aristocratic vanity. Opposite him, a stark contrast in every way, was Jack Wright, the bride’s younger brother. At 19, Jack was slender, his chestnut curls framing a face etched with sensitivity. His autism made the world an overwhelming place, and today was proving to be no exception. Clutched in his trembling hands was a small, carved wooden robin, a talisman against the sensory storm. He wore a slightly too-large charcoal wool suit, his maroon knit tie a splash of color in the monochrome scene. His father, Thomas Wright, a master carpenter of 56, watched from two steps below. Thomas’s weathered face, lined with quiet dignity, and his broad, hunched shoulders spoke of a lifetime of hard work. His slate-gray eyes were sharp, missing nothing as he observed the tense tableau.

Jack rocked back and forth, his fingers fumbling with the wooden robin. It slipped, clattering onto the frost-dusted steps, landing near Brock’s polished patent leather shoes. Brock’s sculpted features contorted into a mask of pure disdain. His eyes narrowed, a cruel glint betraying his inner fury. With a flick of his designer shoe, he sent the cherished toy skittering into the slush. “Don't bring your defective filth near me!” Brock sneered, his voice dripping with venomous disgust. Jack remained frozen, his breath hitching audibly in the frigid air. His eyes widened, tears welling, a silent testament to the pain inflicted. He didn’t make a sound, but his body trembled, a picture of paralyzed shock.

Then, in a flash of unprovoked cruelty, Brock drew back his hand. An open-palmed slap, delivered with blistering velocity, connected with Jack's cheek. The sharp crack echoed off the cold limestone, a sickening sound that ripped through the air. The force of the blow snapped Jack’s head violently to the side. He stumbled, collapsing sideways onto the snow-covered steps, sending a flurry of white powder into the air in slow motion. Brock watched, a contemptuous sneer twisting his lips. “Learn to stay out of my way!” he spat, the words laced with arrogant entitlement. Jack, still silent, clutched his burning cheek, hot tears spilling down his chin, freezing as they hit the snow. His gaze remained fixed on the ground, the humiliation a palpable weight.
