Previously: When David saw his daughter Emily shove his elderly mother Clara off the porch, he reacted in fury. But the truth behind Emily's desperate action would tear their family apart.

The Confrontation in the Yard

David stood on the edge of the concrete porch, his chest heaving as the adrenaline surged through his veins. He looked down at his daughter, Emily, who lay weeping in the dirt, and then at his mother, Clara, who was whimpering softly from the depths of the rosebushes.

"How could you do that to your own grandmother?"
David roared, his voice shaking the quiet neighborhood. He rushed down the steps to help Clara to her feet, his heart aching for his mother. Clara clung to him, playing the victim perfectly, whispering how Emily had lost her mind.

But Emily slowly sat up, spitting a bit of dust from her mouth. Her eyes weren't filled with guilt, but with a fierce, heartbreaking resolve.

"Look in her pocket, Dad!"
she screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Clara.
"Look at what she was trying to hide from you! She's been poisoning Mom for months!"
The words hung in the warm afternoon air, heavy and suffocating. David froze, his hands still supporting his mother. He looked from his daughter's bruised face to Clara, whose grip on his arm suddenly tightened with a desperate strength that didn't match her frail act.

Emily stood up, wiping the tears from her face. She reached into her own pocket and pulled out a small, amber prescription bottle.

"I caught her putting this in Mom's daily tea. This isn't Mom's medication, Dad. It's a heavy sedative that causes respiratory failure over time. Clara has been keeping Mom sick so she could control her estate!"
David's mind raced as he looked at the bottle. It was prescribed to Clara under a different name. He turned his gaze slowly to his mother, waiting for her to laugh off the ridiculous accusation. But instead of confusion, he saw a cold, calculating look slide over Clara's face. The sweet grandmother was gone.
