A Mother's Betrayal
Lauren scrambled down the stairs, her bathrobe fluttering, her hands shaking as she reached out toward Lily. "David, please, it's not what it looks like! We didn't mean to—she was supposed to be asleep!" she cried, her voice cracking with panic. Behind her, Kyle slowly retreated back toward the bedroom, realizing he had walked into a nightmare he couldn't fight his way out of.
"Don't touch her!" David roared, stepping back and shielding Lily with his body. "You locked her out in fifteen-degree weather so you could do... this? With him?"
David carried Lily into the living room, immediately wrapping her in a heavy wool blanket from the sofa. He turned up the thermostat and began gently rubbing her freezing hands and feet, desperately trying to bring the color back to her pale skin. Lauren stood in the doorway, wringing her hands, while Kyle quietly slipped down the stairs, now wearing a t-shirt, trying to sneak out the front door.
"You stay right there," David growled at Kyle. "The police are already on their way. You think you can neglect my daughter and just walk out?"
Kyle froze, his tough demeanor crumbling. Lauren began to sob, offering a string of pathetic excuses. She claimed Lily had slipped out on her own, that the lock must have clicked shut automatically, and that she had only been "distracted" for a few minutes. But David knew the truth. Lily had told him the door was locked from the inside on purpose because she was "being too loud" while Lauren had her "friend" over.
As David waited for the flashing lights of the emergency vehicles, he looked at the woman he had loved for seven years. The betrayal of her infidelity was a knife to his heart, but her willingness to put their daughter's life in danger to cover her tracks was an unforgivable sin.
