A Father's Worst Nightmare

The winter wind howled through the suburban streets, plastering wet, heavy snow against the windshield of Luke’s pickup truck. He had decided to drive over to his ex-wife Jessica’s house an hour early. A strange, nagging gut feeling had been bothering him all afternoon, a persistent worry about his five-year-old daughter, Lily. Pulling up to the curb, he noticed the house was dark except for a single, blindingly bright exterior light shining over the front porch.

As Luke stepped out of his truck, wrapping his leather jacket tightly around his shoulders and pulling his beanie down, he heard a faint, high-pitched whimper. His heart skipped a beat. He rushed up the snow-covered walkway. There, huddled on the frozen welcome mat, was Lily. She was wearing nothing but thin, purple pajamas, her tiny body shivering violently as she sobbed into her hands.

"Did you guys just leave her out there? In the snow? She's five! Five! Look at her! If she freezes, that's on you!"

Luke instantly scooped his freezing daughter into his arms, tucking her head under his chin to shield her from the biting cold. He burst through the front door into the warm foyer, his face red with a mixture of biting wind and pure, unadulterated fury. Snow clung to his blonde hair and goatee as he stood in the entryway, holding the crying child tightly.

Inside, the house was quiet until his heavy boots thudded against the hardwood floor. At the top of the staircase, the master bedroom door swung open. Jessica appeared, wearing a luxurious red silk bathrobe, her face pale with sudden shock. Behind her stood Derek, a shirtless, buzz-cut man with a prominent tribal tattoo stretching across his shoulder. They stared down at Luke, completely speechless as the reality of the situation crashed down upon them.
