Michael didn't look at his wife. His eyes remained locked on Hailey, who was trembling violently on the floor. "Hailey?" he whispered, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in years. "Is that really you?" He took a step forward, but Veronica quickly intervened, placing a manicured hand on his chest. "Michael, please, don't disrupt the staff. She has a job to finish," Veronica said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.

The coldness in Veronica's tone sparked a sudden, terrifying realization in Michael's mind. He looked from his elegant wife to his sobbing daughter. "Did you hire her, Veronica?" he demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. Veronica shrugged elegantly, taking a sip of her wine. "She applied for the agency. I simply selected her. I thought it was time she learned the value of hard work, since she refused to accept your money."

"My money?" Hailey cried out, finally standing up and wiping her wet hands on her apron. "You told me my father passed away! You sent me letters from a lawyer saying he wanted nothing to do with me and had cut me out of his life completely!"

Michael felt the world tilt. Five years ago, after his painful divorce from Hailey's mother, Hailey had vanished. He had hired private investigators, but every lead went cold. He was told Hailey had changed her name and moved abroad, wanting nothing to do with him. Now, looking at his daughter's tear-streaked face, the truth began to unravel.
