Locked Out in the Cold

The autumn storm was relentless, throwing sheets of freezing rain against the glass. Six-year-old Luke stood on the wet stone patio, his red-and-blue Spider-Man suit soaked through and clinging to his shivering frame. Tears mixed with the rain streaming down his pale cheeks as he banged his small fists against the heavy sliding glass door. "Daddy! Daddy!" he screamed, his voice cracking with terror. Inside, the house was dark, silent, and seemingly empty.

Just then, headlights cut through the gloom of the driveway. Chris, returning early from a late shift, slammed the door of his truck. Through the torrential downpour, he spotted the small figure huddled against the glass. Panic seized his chest. Chris, wearing his black leather racer jacket, sprinted across the muddy lawn. He scooped his shivering son into his arms, instantly wrapping his heavy leather jacket around the boy’s freezing shoulders.

"I've got you, buddy. I've got you," Chris whispered, his own heart hammering. He tried the sliding door. Locked. Rage flared inside him. Without hesitating, Chris kicked the frame, forcing the lock to splinter, and burst into the dark house. He set Luke down safely in the dry hallway and ran up the wooden stairs, his boots leaving wet, heavy prints.

His mind raced with terrifying possibilities. Had someone broken in? Was his wife, Ashley, hurt? He reached the master bedroom and flung the door open with a violent crash. The sight that greeted him froze the blood in his veins. Ashley was in bed, but she wasn't alone. Another man was frantically pulling up the sheets. Chris stood in the doorway, dripping wet and shaking with a mixture of fury and disbelief.

"You locked him out!"
he roared, his voice trembling with pure, unadulterated anger. Ashley looked up, her face draining of color in stunned, guilty silence.
