The ballroom erupted into chaotic whispers as Thomas carried Leo to a private study, demanding that Sarah and Elena follow them. Sarah paced the room like a caged animal, her bronze gown swishing aggressively.

"This is absurd, Thomas! You are going to believe a traumatized child and a thieving maid over me?"

she hissed, her face contorted with anger. But Thomas could see the desperate panic hiding behind her eyes.

Thomas set Leo down gently on a leather sofa and turned to Elena, who stood by the door, trembling.

"Elena, please,"

Thomas implored, his voice cracking with emotion.

"Tell me the truth. What happened while I was away?"

Elena looked at the floor, terrified of Sarah's wrath, but looking at Leo's tear-stained face gave her a sudden surge of courage.

"Mr. Sterling, when you left, Ms. Sarah locked Leo in his room for two days so she could go to a party,"

"He became severely dehydrated and developed a high fever. When I found him, I called the ambulance myself. Ms. Sarah threatened to fire me and make sure I was deported if I ever told you. She told the hospital staff she was his mother and barred me from visiting, but I snuck into his room at night to sing to him so he wouldn't feel abandoned."

Thomas felt a cold dread settle in his chest. He turned to Sarah, who was frantically shaking her head.
