The ballroom erupted into a flurry of hushed whispers. Thomas held Leo tightly against his chest, feeling the boy's tiny heart hammering wildly. He turned his piercing gaze toward Elena, the maid who was still trembling in her grey uniform. "Elena, tell me the truth," Thomas demanded, his voice low but carrying a dangerous edge. "What happened at the hospital?"

Elena swallowed hard, looking terrified of Sarah, who was glaring at her with venomous eyes. But seeing Leo's tears, the maid found her courage. "Mr. Sterling, Ms. Sarah was never there," Elena whispered, her voice shaking. "She left Leo alone in that cold room the very first night you left. She told the nurses she was going home to rest, but she actually went to a luxury resort with her friends."

A collective gasp rippled through the wealthy crowd. Sarah's face flushed deep red. "She is a liar! A disgruntled servant trying to extort us!" Sarah shrieked, taking a step toward Elena. But Thomas stepped between them, his towering frame blocking her path.

Elena continued, tears streaming down her face.

"Leo was crying and having panic attacks. I couldn't bear to see him suffer. Every night after my shift ended here, I snuck into the hospital. I sat by his bed, held his hand, and sang him to sleep. When Ms. Sarah found out, she threatened to have me fired and blacklisted if I ever told you. She told Leo that if he spoke a word, she would make sure he never saw you again."

Thomas felt a sickening wave of fury wash over him. The woman he had loved, the woman he trusted to be a mother to his motherless son, had abandoned his sick child and threatened him into silence. Sarah tried to grab Thomas's arm, her voice suddenly sweet and pleading. "Thomas, darling, she is twisting things! I did it for us. The hospital was depressing, and I knew he was in safe hands. Please, don't believe a maid over me!"
