A Father Returns Home Early and Uncovers His Wife's Darkest Secret
Previously: When John walked into his home early, he expected a quiet evening. Instead, he found his daughter trembling on the floor and his wife holding a glass of wine with a chilling smile.
The Shadows Within
The moment the call ended, Sarah’s smirk faltered, replaced by a momentary flicker of panic before she quickly masked it with a sigh of exasperation. She took a slow sip of her wine, waving her hand dismissively at Emma. "John, don't be so dramatic. Emma had another one of her little episodes. She tripped, and I was simply trying to help her calm down." But Emma shrank back, pressing herself against the base of the spiral staircase, her eyes wide with fear. John knew his daughter, and he knew she was not prone to "episodes."
Without a word, John helped Emma to her feet and led her upstairs to her bedroom, locking the door behind them. Once safe inside, Emma’s composure broke completely. She pulled a small, tarnished brass key from her pocket, her hands shaking violently. She explained that while John was away, she had accidentally discovered a hidden compartment behind the bookshelf in Sarah’s private study.
"I found this key, Dad," Emma whispered, tears streaming down her face. "It opened a safe in her closet. Inside... there were medical records. Not just mine, but Mom's. From before she died."
John felt the air leave his lungs. His first wife, Helena, had passed away five years ago from a sudden, unexplained illness. Shortly after, Sarah, who had been Helena’s private nurse and close friend, had comforted John and eventually married him. It had seemed like a natural healing process, but now, a sickening realization began to take shape in John's mind.
Emma handed him a small leather-bound journal she had managed to slip out. It was Helena’s diary from her final months. As John flipped through the pages, his eyes caught passages describing a strange, metallic taste in her food, and how Sarah insisted on administering her daily vitamins personally. The final entry read: "I don't think Sarah is trying to help me. I think she is making me sicker." John's blood ran cold. The woman he shared a bed with was a predator.
