The Gala and the Insult

The Sterling Gallery’s annual gala was a symphony of opulence, a dazzling spectacle held within a ballroom that dripped with gold leaf and shimmered under the light of towering crystal chandeliers. Amber and diamond glints danced across the polished Carrara marble, reflecting the silhouettes of impeccably dressed guests. The air vibrated with the rich sound of classical violins, punctuated by the delicate clinking of crystal flutes. Amidst this extravagance sat Mateo, a 58-year-old blind sculptor. His weathered olive skin was etched with deep laugh lines, and his unseeing, milky-white irises held a quiet dignity. His hands, hardened by years of sculpting and covered in the faint dust of dried grey clay, rested on a velvet stool. Before him, on a rustic timber stand, sat a rugged, unpolished clay bust – a tribute to his father. Suddenly, the opulent scene was shattered by the arrival of Courtney Sterling, a 34-year-old art dealer. With slicked-back raven hair, a razor-sharp jawline, and cold, predatory hazel eyes, Courtney exuded an air of smug, aristocratic arrogance, amplified by his bespoke burgundy velvet tuxedo. He loomed over Mateo, a figure of pure, unadulterated condescension.

"Fifty dollars is pure charity for this hideous lump of mud, old man—take it before security drags you into the gutter."

With a sharp slap of paper hitting wood, Courtney flung a crumpled fifty-dollar bill onto the sculptor's table. He leaned down, his manicured face invading Mateo’s personal space, a sneer twisting his lips. Mateo, however, remained impassive. His mouth was firmly closed, his rugged jaw relaxed. His unseeing eyes stared straight ahead into the darkness, while his hands, with unwavering focus, continued to methodically smooth the cold clay, betraying no tremor of emotion. The insult hung heavy in the air, a stark contrast to the serene focus of the blind artist.
