Previously: When Robert saw his young daughter Ashley shove his elderly mother off the porch, his protective instincts turned violent. But the truth behind that desperate shove would shatter his entire world.

The Poison in the Cup

Trembling with anger, Robert rushed down the porch steps to help Hazel out of the bushes. The elderly woman sobbed softly, clinging to his red shirt like a frightened child.

"She tried to kill me, Robert! She’s out of her mind!"
Hazel whimpered, her voice cracking with calculated vulnerability. Robert glared at Ashley, who was slowly pushing herself up from the dirt, a trickle of blood running from her lip.

"Get off my property, Ashley,"
Robert growled, his voice shaking with a dangerous edge.
"How could you lay a hand on your own grandmother? You are no daughter of mine."

But Ashley didn't run. Despite the pain radiating through her jaw, she stood her ground, her eyes flashing with a fierce, protective light. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, blue glass vial, throwing it onto the wooden steps. It rolled to a stop right at Robert's feet.

"I didn't push her to hurt her, Dad,"
Ashley gasped, wiping the blood from her mouth.
"I pushed her because she was trying to swallow that. And do you know what is inside it? It’s the same tasteless chemical that has been making you sick for the last six months. She’s been poisoning your tea, Dad!"

Robert froze. For months, his health had been mysteriously declining. Doctors were baffled by his sudden chronic fatigue, muscle weakness, and nausea. Hazel had insisted on moving in to "nurse" him back to health, preparing all his meals and herbal teas. Robert looked from the blue vial to his mother. Hazel’s face suddenly drained of all color, her fragile demeanor instantly hardening into a mask of pure panic as she tried to scramble toward the bottle.
