A Ghost from the Past

Charles stared at the tiny, circular photograph inside the silver locket. It showed a beaming, younger Sarah holding a newborn baby. But it was the second photo, tucked loosely behind the first, that made his hands begin to shake. It was a picture of a woman who looked strikingly like Sarah, yet possessed a wilder, more troubled gaze. It was Evelyn, Sarah’s estranged twin sister, whom Charles had been told had vanished across the country a decade ago after a bitter family fallout.

Underneath the photo, a tiny slip of paper was folded neatly. In elegant, hurried handwriting, it read: "She has my eyes, Sarah. Please let me see her just once."

"A lady gave it to me at the ring-toss booth," Maya sobbed, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "She said she was my aunt. She told me she loved me, and then she ran away when she saw you coming. Dad, did Mom lie to us?"

The weight of the revelation crashed down on Charles. He remembered the fierce arguments between Sarah and her sister before Maya was born, and how Sarah had insisted on cutting all ties, claiming Evelyn was dangerous. But looking at the desperate plea in the note, Charles realized the truth was far more complicated. His late wife had kept a massive secret to protect her own custody of Maya, hiding the aunt who had desperately wanted to be a part of her niece's life.

Charles looked out the car window. Standing near the edge of the parking lot, illuminated by the soft golden light of the setting sun, was a woman in a dark coat, staring anxiously toward their coupe. It was Evelyn. Her eyes were filled with the same desperate hope he had just seen in the old photograph.

"Stay here, sweetie," Charles whispered, his voice cracking. "I need to go talk to her."
