The Accusation in the Hall

The echoes of footsteps filled the grand, marble-tiled hall of the city administration building, a place where Thomas had hoped to finalize the happiest chapter of his new life. He gently pushed the wheelchair of his ten-year-old daughter, Grace, who sat quietly, her legs draped in a soft blanket. Beside them walked Thomas's fiancée, Megan, looking radiant in a striking red dress and an elegant tan coat, her curly brown hair bouncing with every step. She looked like the perfect partner, the woman who had brought light back into their lives after a devastating car accident had claimed Thomas's wife and left Grace unable to walk. But the peaceful atmosphere was shattered in an instant.

Thomas's eight-year-old son, Mason, suddenly stopped walking. Clad in a dark grey hoodie, his small fists were clenched tightly at his sides. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and absolute fury. Slowly, Mason raised his hand and pointed an accusing finger directly at Megan.

"She's not really paralyzed," Mason yelled, his voice echoing off the high marble walls.

Thomas froze, his hands gripping the handles of Grace's wheelchair. He looked at his young son, completely baffled by the outburst. But Mason wasn't finished. He stepped forward, his voice trembling but resolute.

"Your fiancée is the reason she's still like this!" the young boy asserted.

Thomas felt the air leave his lungs. He turned slowly to look at Megan, his heart hammering against his ribs. The color had completely drained from her face. She gasped, taking a guilty step backward, her hands flying to her mouth. Thomas stared at her, his voice a cracked whisper.

"What is he talking about, Megan? Is this true?"
