A Father's Fury

The morning sun, usually a symbol of warmth and new beginnings, cast long, cold shadows across the opulent marble floors of the neoclassical Milanese villa. It was a stark contrast to the scene unfolding in the breakfast room. Five-year-old Lucy, her chestnut pigtails askew and her simple grey pinafore dress looking forlorn, knelt on the unforgiving floor. Her small hands were clasped, her lower lip trembled, and tears welled in her eyes, spilling onto her flushed cheeks. Before her sat a gleaming stainless-steel dog bowl, filled with the unappetizing remnants of cold porridge. This was not a place a child should be, especially not at her father’s breakfast table.

Towering over her was Bianca, her father’s fiancée. With a slicked-back blonde chignon and an emerald silk wrap dress that exuded wealth, she presented a picture of aristocratic disdain. Her diamond drop earrings dangled as she pointed a sharp, manicured finger at the bowl. Her voice, when she spoke, was laced with a venom that curdled the air. “If you behave like a stray mutt at my table, you can eat off the floor like one.” The words were a whip crack, designed to break the spirit of the already trembling child. Lucy remained silent, her mouth clamped shut, but her silent tears spoke volumes of her pain and humiliation. In the background, Emma, the maid, stood by the sideboard, her dark bun neat, her black uniform crisp, her hand clutching a smartphone, her expression unreadable but her presence noted.

The scene was frozen in time until the arrival of Vittorio, Lucy’s father. Standing in the carved oak doorway, the 44-year-old patriarch, dressed in a sharp charcoal bespoke suit, seemed to absorb the tension instantly. His silver-streaked dark hair was immaculate, but his jaw muscles clenched as he took in the tableau. His eyes, usually warm, now held a dangerous glint. He was a man accustomed to control, and this display of cruelty ignited a cold fury within him. The opulent room, with its crystal wall sconces and mahogany table laden with pastries and silver cloches, felt like a stage set for a tragedy, but Vittorio was about to change the script.
