The Accusation at the Courtyard

The afternoon sun bathed the elegant outdoor courtyard of Le Petit Jardin in a warm, golden glow. Robert, a successful real estate developer in his late forties, sat comfortably at a corner table draped in crisp white linen. He smoothed the lapels of his light grey blazer, looking admiringly at his fiancée, Sophia. Wearing a beautiful floral dress that complemented the sunny weather, Sophia was the picture of grace. But the idyllic family lunch was shattered in an instant when Robert's eight-year-old son, Ethan, abruptly stood up.

Ethan’s face was flushed with anger as he stepped toward the table, pointing a finger directly at Sophia's daughter, Ava, who stood meekly behind him holding her crutches.

"Your daughter can see!" Ethan yelled, his voice cutting through the quiet chatter of the upscale restaurant. "She poisoned her food!"

Robert stared at his son in utter bewilderment. Sophia’s elegant smile stiffened, her eyes darting nervously toward the surrounding tables. Before anyone could react, Ethan reached into a small burlap sack he had been carrying and pulled out a small, amber medicine bottle, slamming it onto the table.

Beside him, Ava slowly slipped off her oversized dark sunglasses. She looked directly at Robert, her eyes clear and perfectly focused.

"Mommy gives it to me," Ava confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "It makes my legs heavy and my eyes blurry."

Robert felt the world spin. His gaze dropped to the white tablecloth. There, sitting right next to his water glass, was an identical medicine bottle that Sophia had claimed contained her daily herbal supplements. With a trembling hand, Robert reached out and picked it up, looking at his fiancée. Sophia stood frozen, her face pale as a ghost, unable to utter a single word of defense under the bright afternoon sun.
