Previously: When a kind-hearted waitress is fired on the spot for assisting a mute girl in a wheelchair, she has no idea that her simple act of empathy will expose a long-hidden family secret.

The Secret Behind the Silence

The diner fell into a stunned silence. Sarah felt a lump rise in her throat as Arthur pointed a shaking, angry finger toward the door. "I don't pay you to socialize with the customers or play therapist!" Arthur hissed, ignoring the shock of the onlookers. Tears stinging her eyes, Sarah stripped off her black apron, placed it on the counter, and walked out into the pouring rain.

She had barely reached her old sedan when she heard footsteps splashing behind her. It was Mark. He was panting, his tweed jacket soaked, but his eyes held an intense, desperate light.

"Wait! Please, Sarah, stop!"
he called out.

Sarah turned around, shivering in the cold.

"I'm sorry, sir. I didn't mean to cause trouble. I just wanted to help Lily."

"No, you don't understand,"
Mark said, grabbing her hands gently.
"Lily hasn't spoken a single word since her mother passed away two years ago. We have been to dozens of specialists, speech therapists, and child psychologists. None of them could get through to her. But in three minutes, you did. You gave my daughter her voice back."

Sarah was stunned. She looked past Mark and saw Lily watching them through the diner's foggy glass window, her small hand waving gently. Mark explained that he was a successful local pediatrician who had struggled to heal his own daughter. He recognized Sarah's innate gift and empathy immediately.

"I want to hire you,"
Mark proposed, his voice filled with hope.
"Not as a waitress, but as Lily’s private companion and caregiver. I will pay you triple what Arthur was paying you, and I will cover your nursing school tuition. Please, help me bring my daughter back."
Sarah looked at the little girl in the window, then back at Mark, realizing her life was about to change forever.
