Previously: When Arthur confronted his mother for firing their young maid, Sarah, he didn't expect a silver pocket watch to unravel a web of lies surrounding his late wife, Celeste.

The Intercepted Legacy

"Leave this house immediately, Sarah, or I will have the police escort you out for theft!" Eleanor barked, her composure cracking as she rushed down the remaining stairs.

But Arthur stepped between his mother and the trembling maid. He gently set Noah down, telling the boy to go to his playroom, before turning back to face the two women. The tension in the room was palpable, suffocating.

"Let her speak, Mother," Arthur said, his voice deadly quiet. He turned to Sarah. "What did my mother keep?"

Sarah wiped her face, holding out the silver pocket watch. "Your mother kept Celeste's letters to Noah," she sobbed. "And she kept me away from my nephew. Celeste knew she was sick, Arthur. She didn't die in a sudden accident—she had a terminal heart condition she kept from you because she didn't want you to live in fear. She wrote letters for Noah to read on every birthday. She gave them to your mother to keep safe because she trusted her. But Eleanor hated where we came from. She wanted to erase our family entirely."

Arthur stared at his mother, horror dawning on him. Eleanor's face had gone pale, her lips pressed into a thin, defensive line. Arthur remembered how his mother had insisted on handling Celeste's personal effects after her passing, claiming it was too painful for Arthur to do himself.

"That is an absurd lie!" Eleanor hissed, though her eyes darted nervously. "Celeste was unstable. I did what was best for the family reputation. We don't need trash from her past dragging us down."

Sarah shook her head, pressing a small release button on the side of the silver pocket watch. The back casing popped open, revealing not gears, but a tiny, folded piece of parchment hidden behind the clock face. It was in Celeste's unmistakable, elegant handwriting.

"I didn't steal this watch, Arthur," Sarah whispered. "Celeste gave it to me years ago. She told me if Eleanor ever tried to cut me out of Noah's life, the key to the safe deposit box where she kept the duplicates of her letters was hidden inside."
