A Stormy Arrival

The air in the private airport's VIP lounge crackled with more than just the static of the brewing storm outside. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows, streaked with the relentless downpour, offered a distorted view of the runway. Outside, the tarmac lights glowed like fallen stars through the rain, punctuated by the urgent pulse of crimson emergency flashers. Inside, the polished black marble floors mirrored the dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, reflecting the golden glow of a private jet idling nearby. The low rumble of thunder and the distant whine of jet turbines provided a somber soundtrack, occasionally pierced by the mournful wail of sirens.

Carter Ross, a politician whose silver temples and bespoke suit screamed privilege, paced with aggressive energy. His reflection rippled across the wet marble as he slammed a crystal tumbler onto a brass console. Whiskey sloshed, a dark stain spreading on the polished surface, mirroring the dark fury in his eyes. Veins bulged in his neck, his jaw clenched tight. He was a man accustomed to getting his way, his arrogance a palpable force in the room.

"Have security tow those filthy fire trucks off my private tarmac driveway immediately, or I'll destroy your careers!"

His voice was a snarl, laced with entitlement. But his tirade was met with a wall of silence. Standing before him was Captain Tommy Evans, a man whose face bore the marks of a life lived on the front lines. His chiseled jaw was smudged with soot, his skin bore the faint, heat-blistered texture of countless fires. His eyes, dark and steady, held a silent challenge. He wore his singed Nomex turnout coat, dripping rainwater and ash onto the pristine floor. In his arms, cradled with a surprising gentleness, was Mia Ross, Carter's seven-year-old daughter. She was wrapped in a high-visibility yellow thermal rescue liner, her small form limp and still.

Without another word, Tommy kicked open the heavy glass doors. A mist of rain and dense gray smoke billowed into the lounge, swirling around his imposing silhouette. He didn't look back at the sputtering politician, his focus solely on the child he held and the mission ahead.
