Edward had been living in a gray haze ever since the tragedy that took his family. He ran his downtown diner like a machine, going through the motions of cooking, cleaning, and closing up. But on this particular autumn evening, a spark of humanity broke through his grief. He was carrying a warm carton of roasted chicken and vegetables to his car when he saw her.

She was a little girl, shivering in a light blue sundress that offered no protection against the biting wind. Her face was smudged, but her eyes held a striking, desperate depth. Edward’s heart clenched. He approached her gently, holding out the steaming container.

"Here, sweetie. Take this," Edward said, his voice soft.

The girl looked at the food, then up at him. A beautiful, pure smile broke across her face.

"Thank you, sir," she whispered.

Before he could ask her name or where she lived, she clutched the warm box to her chest and darted down a dark alleyway. Concerned for her safety, Edward pulled his wool coat tight and followed her.

He navigated the winding, shadowed alley until he saw her disappear down the steps of a crumbling basement apartment. Peering through the cracked door frame, Edward’s breath caught in his throat.

Inside, a frail elderly woman named Florence sat on a bare mattress on the floor, huddled with three small children. Lucy, the girl in the blue dress, proudly placed the warm box before them.

"How did you get food?" one of the younger boys asked, his eyes wide with hunger.
"You guys eat first," Lucy replied gently, nudging the box toward them.

Florence looked up, her face etched with worry.

"And what about you, Lucy? Did you eat?" she asked.

Lucy lied with absolute grace.

"I already ate at school, Grandma. I'm full."

Standing in the shadows, tears streamed down Edward's face. He whispered to himself, "That's a lie." He knew she was starving, yet she chose to feed her family first.
