Previously: After handing a box of warm food to a young girl on a cold evening, Edward followed her into a dark alley, only to uncover a heartbreaking family secret.

A Cruel Confrontation

Edward was about to step inside to offer his help when heavy, aggressive footsteps echoed down the concrete stairs. He shrank back into the shadows as a heavy-set man in an expensive suit barged past the door, slamming it against the wall. It was Harold Henderson, a notoriously ruthless local slumlord.

"Time's up, Florence!" Henderson roared, ignoring the terrified gasps of the children. "You’re three months behind on rent. If you aren't out of here by tomorrow morning, the marshals will throw your junk on the curb!"

Florence trembled, clutching the children close.

"Please, Mr. Henderson, have mercy," she begged, tears spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. "The children... we have nowhere to go. It’s freezing outside. I just need a few more weeks to find a job."
"Not my problem," Henderson sneered. "This building is being sold to a major developer anyway. I need this unit vacant. No more excuses!"

Lucy stood up, bravely placing her small body between the landlord and her crying siblings.

"Don't hurt my grandma!" she cried.

Henderson scoffed and reached out to grab the eviction notice from his pocket, nearly shoving the young girl aside.

Edward had seen enough. The grief that had paralyzed him for years instantly transformed into protective rage. He stepped out of the dark hallway and into the room, grabbing Henderson’s wrist before he could touch the child.

"Keep your hands off them," Edward growled, his voice shaking with authority.

Henderson spun around, ready to yell, but as his eyes locked onto Edward's face, the color drained from his cheeks.

"Mr... Mr. Vance?" Henderson stammered, his arrogant demeanor instantly evaporating.

It turned out that Edward wasn't just a simple diner owner. Before his retirement and the tragedy, Edward Vance had been one of the city's most prominent real estate investors—and he still owned the ultimate holding company that leased this very building to Henderson.
