David was about to knock on the door and offer more help when heavy, aggressive footsteps echoed down the damp basement hallway. A large, gruff man pushed past David, slamming the wooden door wide open. It was Miller, the building’s notorious and ruthless landlord. His face was twisted in an angry sneer as he glared at the terrified family.
"Where is my money, Sarah?"Miller bellowed, his voice echoing off the cracked concrete walls. The two younger children shrieked and hid behind their mother. Sarah, pale and visibly trembling, stood up to shield her children.
"Please, Mr. Miller,"she pleaded, tears streaming down her face.
"I lost my job at the laundry last week. I just need a few more days to find work. I promise I’ll pay you."
Miller scoffed loudly, his eyes landing on the open takeout box. With a cruel, mocking laugh, he raised his heavy boot and stomped directly onto the box, crushing the warm food into the filthy floor.
"You have money for fancy takeout, but you can't pay your rent? I'm done waiting. You have one hour to pack your trash and get out of my building!"
Lily bravely rushed forward, throwing her small arms around her mother’s waist.
"Please don't hurt my mama! We don't have anywhere else to go!"she sobbed. Seeing the utter cruelty unfold, David’s blood boiled. He stepped out of the shadows and marched into the room, standing directly between Miller and the terrified family. "Step away from them right now," David commanded, his voice cold as steel.
Miller sneered, unimpressed by David's expensive overcoat.
"Who the hell are you? This is private property. Get out before I call the police."David stood his ground, refusing to back down.
"Call them. I’d love to explain to them how you're illegally evicting a family in freezing temperatures."But Miller laughed, pulling a crumpled paper from his pocket.
