The Unraveling

The air in the private jet terminal was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the low hum of hushed conversations. Rain lashed against the panoramic windows, blurring the runway lights into streaks of liquid amber. I, Victoria Sterling, 48, a woman forged in the fires of ambition and factory grit, stood tall in my tailored camel-wool trench coat, a glass of champagne cool in my gloved hand. Tonight was a celebration. My factory had hit record production, and I was on my way to seal a lucrative international deal. Then I saw her. A woman, barely 34, dressed in scuffed steel-toe boots, an oil-stained high-visibility vest over faded industrial trousers. She was a smudge of grime in this temple of privilege. My jaw tightened. How dare she trespass? This was first class, not a locker room.

"A filthy factory rat in First Class?" I sneered, shoving her hard against a polished brass luggage cart. The metal shrieked in protest. "Get back to the blast furnace where you belong!"

She absorbed the impact with a stillness that unnerved me. Her boot heels dug into the Carrara marble, her jaw clenched. Her eyes, a steely gray, narrowed, but there was no fear, only a chilling calculation. That's when I decided to teach her a lesson in respect. I raised my hand, a swift, vicious backhand aimed at her grease-smudged cheek. But in a blur of motion, her hand shot up, intercepting my wrist with a force that sent a jolt up my arm. The sound echoed in the sudden silence.

"You failed the line safety audit, Victoria," she rasped, her voice low and commanding.

My breath hitched. Panic flickered in my dilated eyes. This wasn't going as planned. Not at all.
