The air in the dockside tavern hung thick with the scent of stale beer, damp wood, and the metallic tang of impending trouble. Outside, the relentless drumming of torrential rain against the grimy skylight was a chaotic percussion, each drop a tiny hammer blow against the fragile silence within. Water seeped through unseen cracks, collecting in rusted iron buckets that stood like silent sentinels against the splintered timber walls, their oxidized anchor chains glinting dully in the flickering light of swinging oil lanterns. It was a place steeped in amber shadows, a forgotten corner of the city where secrets festered and tempers flared.

Armand Dubois, a man built like a dockside crane, his 52 years etched into the deep scowling furrows of his brow and the coarse salt-and-pepper stubble clinging to his jaw, loomed over Clara. At 29, Clara was an unassuming figure, swallowed by oversized, soot-dusted denim overalls and scuffed work boots. Her rain-dampened dark hair did little to soften the razor-sharp hazel of her eyes, which held an unnervingly poised stillness. She clutched a crumpled safety report, her posture rigid, a stark contrast to the brute force radiating from the man before her.

With a guttural roar that seemed to shake the very foundations of the tavern, Armand slammed a heavy ceramic beer mug onto the splintered table. The ceramic cracked with a sharp report, and foamy ale sloshed over Clara’s report, a dark stain spreading like a bruise. “You’re an incompetent stray who wouldn’t last ten minutes beside my blast furnace!” he bellowed, his voice laced with venom. Clara remained silent, her mouth a firm line, her jaw subtly clenching. Her unblinking gaze locked onto his, refusing to flinch, a silent challenge in the face of his fury.

He lunged, his scarred fist bunching the denim collar of her jacket. With explosive force, he hauled her forward, the timber bench shrieking in protest against the rough floorboards. The movement was violent, kinetic, and terrifying. “Sign the falsified accident waiver right now, or you’ll vanish beneath the black harbor tide tonight!” he snarled, his words a spittle-flecked whisper of pure malice. Clara remained silent, her composure unwavering, though a single tear welled along her lower left eyelid from the sheer force of the jolt. Her chin, however, hardened into a mask of icy defiance.

Armand raised his heavy, brass-ringed hand, the intention to strike chillingly clear. But before his fist could connect, Clara’s arm snapped upward with a speed that defied belief. Her slender fingers clamped onto his thick wrist, her grip an inescapable pressure-point counter-grip. A sharp, resonant snap echoed through the room – the sound of strained tendons yielding. Armand’s momentum halted abruptly. His eyes widened in paralyzed shock, his breath hitching audibly. The color drained from his ruddy face as agonizing joint torque forced him to his knees, his own rage now his undoing.
