The air in the wood-paneled county supreme courtroom was thick with an almost suffocating tension. Dust motes danced in the shafts of amber sunlight that speared through the tall, arched windows, illuminating the worn leather of the legal benches and the polished gleam of the walnut gallery railing. Rain streaked the leaded glass, mirroring the unease that rippled through the packed spectators, their hushed murmurs a counterpoint to the distant rumble of thunder. In the center aisle, before the witness stand, stood Brock Henderson, a man built like a brick outhouse, his bull neck straining against a cheap, wrinkled suit. His face was a roadmap of hard living, etched with graying stubble and scarred knuckles. He lunged, a raw, guttural snarl escaping his lips. His calloused index finger, blunt and accusing, slammed into the chest of Liam Vance with a dull thud that seemed to echo in the cavernous room. Spittle flew, landing on Liam’s face, but the young man, clad in a faded denim work jacket, didn’t flinch. His boots skidded a mere inch on the polished parquet as Brock spat his venom: “Sign this forged safety waiver right now, you worthless factory runt, or I’ll snap your collarbone before the judge sits down!” Liam remained silent, his jaw set, his steel-gray eyes locked onto Brock’s throat with an unyielding, lethal composure that belied the violent shove.
