Previously: A corrupt lawyer tries to disinherit a seven-year-old with a fake DNA test. But the boy's hidden music box holds a secret that could destroy the lawyer's scheme forever.

The Probate Judge's Gavel Fell at 9 AM, and Preston's Laugh Echoed From the Holding Cell

Three days later, I stood in the probate courtroom with Lucas's hand in mine. The judge, a stern woman in her sixties named Judge Marisol Vega, peered over her glasses at the stack of documents before her.

Preston had been released on bail, and he sat at the opposing table with a smug smile. He'd hired a new attorney, a shark named Margaux Pierce, known for destroying witnesses on the stand.

"Mr. Blackwood," Judge Vega began, "the court has received a lab report from the clinic in question, claiming 0.00% biological probability between you and the minor, Lucas."

"That report is a forgery, Your Honor," I said, my voice steady. "I have an original, watermarked court certificate showing 99.99%."

Preston leaned forward, his grin widening. "Your Honor, the so-called 'original' was produced from a child's music box. Surely the court can't accept evidence from a toy."

A ripple of laughter went through the gallery. Lucas squeezed my hand, his little face pale but determined.

"The music box was my late wife's," I said, sliding the certificate to the clerk. "It's been in the family for three generations. And the seal on this document is verified by the state DNA lab."

Judge Vega examined the certificate under a magnifying glass. Her expression remained unreadable. Then she looked up.

"The seal appears authentic. But I will need a second verification from an independent lab. We'll reconvene in two weeks."

As the gavel fell, Preston shot me a triumphant look. "Two weeks is a long time, Blackwood. A lot can happen in two weeks."

That night, Lucas and I returned to the estate library. He sat on the floor, the empty music box beside him. "Daddy, what if the other lab makes a mistake?"

"They won't, son. The truth is on our side."

But the next morning, a courier delivered a letter from Margaux Pierce. My stomach dropped as I read it. She had filed a motion to have Lucas's mother's estate audited, claiming she had hidden assets to bribe the court.

"She's trying to drag her name through the mud," I muttered, crumpling the letter. My late wife was innocent. This was a smear campaign.

The Second Lab Report Arrived at Midnight, and the Seal Was Different Than I Expected

Ten days into the two-week window, my private investigator called. He had discovered that Preston had paid a lab technician to alter the original samples. But the technician had kept a copy of the original data — and a recording of Preston offering $50,000 for the falsification.

"Get me that recording," I ordered. "And get me the technician."

The technician, a nervous man named Dr. Elias Chen, agreed to testify in exchange for immunity. But when I met him in a hotel lobby, he was trembling.

"Mr. Blackwood, they threatened my family," he said. "If I testify, they'll hurt my daughter."

I placed a hand on his shoulder. "I'll have my security team guard them 24/7. You'll be safe."

On the morning of the reconvened hearing, I walked into the courtroom with Dr. Chen and the recording. Preston's face went white when he saw the technician.

"Your Honor," I announced, "I present new evidence: a sworn affidavit from Dr. Elias Chen, the lab technician who was paid to forge the 0.00% report. And a recording of Preston discussing the bribe."

The courtroom erupted in whispers. Judge Vega called for silence, her eyes narrowing at Preston.

"Mr. Preston, you will remain seated. This court will now hear the recording."

As the audio played, Preston's smirk vanished. His attorney sat frozen, her notes forgotten. By the time the recording ended, Preston was gripping the table, white-knuckled.

"This is... fabricated," he stammered. "That's not my voice."

"The voice analysis matches," Judge Vega said coldly. "I'm ordering your disbarment and a full criminal investigation. Mr. Blackwood, custody of Lucas is confirmed. Case dismissed."

But as the gavel fell, Preston lunged toward Lucas, knocking over a stack of files. "You little brat! You ruined everything!"

Two bailiffs tackled him before he could touch my son. He screamed curses as they dragged him away, his face twisted with rage.

Lucas buried his face in my chest, trembling. "Daddy, is he gone?"

"He's gone, son," I said, holding him tight. "And he's never coming back."
