Previously: Mrs. Gable presents a fake heir to the Thornes, but a quiet child with a stolen locket reveals a hidden ruby latch — and a truth that will send the matron to prison.

The Cracked Ruby and the Final Verdict

The courtroom was packed. Reporters filled the back benches, their cameras flashing as Nathaniel, Genevieve, and Lily walked in. Lily wore a new dress — a soft blue one that Genevieve had bought that morning — but she still clutched the silver pocket watch, its ruby latch catching the light.

Mrs. Gable sat at the defendant's table, her pearl necklaces gleaming as she smirked at Lily. Her lawyers shuffled papers, looking confident. But Lily knew something they didn't.

The judge called the court to order. Mrs. Gable's lawyer stood first, presenting the witness — a thin woman with nervous eyes. "I saw the baby switch," the woman claimed. "The Thorne child died at birth, and the mother paid me to swap in another."

A gasp rippled through the room. Genevieve gripped Lily's hand, her knuckles white. But Lily remained calm. She looked at the witness, and something clicked. "You used to work for my mother," she said softly. "You helped her hide the watch."

The woman's eyes widened. "I... I don't know what you mean."

"You do," Lily insisted. "You're the one who put the note inside. You knew she was going to die."

The courtroom erupted. The judge banged his gavel, and the witness began to cry, confessing that Mrs. Gable had paid her to lie — that the birth certificate Lily held was real, that she'd seen it with her own eyes.

Mrs. Gable's face turned ashen. Her lawyers scrambled, but it was too late. The judge ruled in the Thornes' favor, ordering Mrs. Gable to be held on charges of fraud, kidnapping, and attempted murder.

As the guards handcuffed her, Mrs. Gable laughed — a hollow, broken sound. "You think you've won?" she spat at Lily. "But you don't know what I did to your mother."

Lily walked toward her, the watch in her hand. "I know," she said, her voice steady. "You killed her because she refused to give me up. But you made a mistake." She held up the watch, the ruby latch cracked. "You left this with her body. And I found it."

Mrs. Gable's eyes widened. "You... you were there?"

"I saw everything," Lily said. "I was hiding in the closet. I was only a year old, but I remembered. I always remembered."

The courtroom fell silent. Nathaniel stepped forward, placing a hand on Lily's shoulder. "It's over," he said. "She'll never hurt anyone again."

As Mrs. Gable was dragged away, Lily turned to her parents. Tears streamed down her face, but she was smiling. For the first time in her life, she felt safe.

That night, the family sat together in the library, the fire crackling. Lily placed the watch on the table, the cracked ruby glowing in the light. "I want to bury it with my mother," she said. "So she can rest."

Nathaniel nodded. "We'll do it together."

Genevieve pulled Lily into a hug. "You're not just our daughter," she whispered. "You're our miracle."

Lily closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of her parents around her. The truth had set her free — and the Thorne legacy would live on, not in gold or land, but in love.

And as the fire crackled, Lily knew that some secrets were worth keeping — because they led to the greatest treasure of all.
