The Slam Heard in the Library

The chandelier's amber light quivered as Vanessa's palm hit the mahogany desk. The sound cracked through the room like a whip, and Lucas flinched, his small hands tightening around the leather evidence pouch his mother had given him before she died.

"Throw this brat out now!" Vanessa's voice dripped with triumph. Her emerald dress gleamed, and her gold heels clicked as she circled the desk, pointing a manicured finger at the boy's chest.

Alexander Blackwood sat motionless at the head of the table, his steel-grey eyes fixed on the forged custody waiver she'd just slammed down. The document claimed Lucas was not his biological son—that the boy had no claim to the Blackwood fortune.

"Sign it," Vanessa hissed, sliding a gold pen toward him. "I've already notified the board. The shares are mine once you're declared incompetent."

Lucas felt tears burning his lower lids. He blinked them back, refusing to let them fall. His father hadn't looked at him once since Vanessa walked in.

But Lucas had been waiting for this moment. He'd found the envelope in his mother's old coat pocket—the one she'd hidden in the attic before cancer took her. The one she'd whispered about on her deathbed: "When the time comes, give it to your father. Don't let her win."

Vanessa smirked, watching Alexander's fingers hover over the signature line. "Tick tock, darling. The board meets in an hour."

Alexander's jaw tightened. He looked from the waiver to his son, and for a second, Lucas saw a flicker of doubt in his eyes.

"Wait," Lucas said, his voice trembling but clear. He stepped forward, holding out the wax-sealed blue envelope. "Check the real hospital seal."

Vanessa laughed—a sharp, brittle sound. "What is this, a school project?" But her smirk faltered when Alexander reached for the envelope.

He broke the wax seal under the chandelier's light. Inside, a gold-embossed Supreme Court DNA certificate gleamed: 99.9998% biological paternity match between Alexander Blackwood and Lucas Blackwood.

Alexander's hands shook. He flipped to the second page—a bank receipt for $50,000 paid to a private lab clerk. The clerk's name matched the one who'd signed the forged waiver Vanessa had just presented.

"You forged the entire report," he said, his voice low and dangerous.

Vanessa's face drained of color. "That's—that's not mine," she stammered, backing toward the door.

But Alexander was already pressing a button on his desk. The library doors swung open, and two uniformed officers stepped in.

"Bailiff, put handcuffs on now."

Vanessa screamed, clawing at the officers as they seized her wrists. "You'll regret this! I know things about your company—things that will ruin you!"

Alexander didn't answer. He pulled Lucas into his arms, pressing the boy's head to his chest. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I should have believed you."

Lucas sobbed quietly, but a smile broke through his tears. For the first time in months, he felt safe.

But as the officers dragged Vanessa away, she twisted her neck and hissed one last thing: "You think it's over? The real will is gone. I burned it last night."

Alexander froze. Lucas's eyes went wide. The safe in the library—the one behind the painting—had never been opened. And on it, in his mother's handwriting, was a sticky note: "For Lucas, when he's ready."

Neither of them knew what was inside. But Vanessa's laughter echoed in the hallway like a curse.
