The Gathering in the Gorge

The mist hung heavy in the narrow, rocky gorge, casting a somber gray shroud over the gathered assembly. For centuries, the legendary sword Ignis had remained embedded deep within a cracked, ancient boulder, waiting for the one true leader destined to unite the fractured realm. Dozens of knights, lords, and champions had traveled from the farthest corners of the kingdom, each believing they possessed the strength and nobility required to claim the sacred weapon. Among them was Lord Borin, a rugged, brown-bearded warrior of thirty-five whose name was synonymous with brutal victories and unyielding power.

Clad in heavy, dark iron armor that bore the scars of countless battles, Borin stepped forward with absolute confidence. He sneered at the silent stone, convinced that his legendary strength would easily claim the prize. He gripped the leather-wrapped hilt, planted his iron-booted feet, and pulled with all his might. The veins in his neck bulged, his face turned crimson, and his heavy breathing echoed off the canyon walls. Yet, despite his monumental effort, the blade did not budge even a fraction of an inch.

Defeated and humiliated, Borin released his grip and turned to his men.

If I couldn't pull it out, no one can,
he grumbled, his voice dripping with wounded pride. The warriors murmured in agreement, prepared to abandon the quest. It was then that Arthur, a slender, dirt-smudged young man of eighteen, stepped out from the shadows. Dressed in a tattered, soot-stained tunic, he looked entirely out of place among the towering, armored men. Yet, as he looked up at the legendary hilt, an inexplicable sense of destiny washed over him. Ignoring the mocking laughter of the surrounding soldiers, Arthur stepped toward the boulder. He looked up at the hilt and spoke with quiet, unwavering resolve.
I am Arthur. And I am going to claim you.
With a grimy hand, he firmly gripped the leather-wrapped hilt, and a sudden, quiet hush fell over the entire gorge.
