Previously: A terrified foster girl hides under the stairs, clutching a silk baby blanket embroidered with a royal crest. When a billionaire couple arrives for a welfare check, one glimpse at the charm changes everything—and uncovers a stolen child.

The Confrontation at the Manor

The Thorne estate was a sprawling mansion with iron gates and manicured gardens, but to me, it felt like a cage. The marble floors echoed with every step, and the chandeliers cast cold light on the portraits lining the walls—generations of Thornes, all with the same sharp eyes as the woman waiting in the parlor.

Eleanor Thorne sat in a velvet armchair like a queen on a throne. She was older than in the photo, but her gaze was just as icy. She didn't stand when we entered. She didn't even flinch.

"Nathaniel," she said, her voice smooth as poison. "What a surprise. And you've brought guests."

"You know who she is," Nathaniel said, stepping forward. His hand was wrapped around mine, and I felt the tremor in his grip.

Eleanor's eyes flicked to me, and for a moment, something cold passed through them. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"I found the note," I said, my voice surprising me. I pulled it from the blanket and held it up. "You paid Carl to keep me hidden. You wanted the fortune for yourself."

Eleanor's mask slipped—just a crack. "That's ridiculous," she said, but her voice wavered.

"The detective is already on his way," Genevieve added, stepping beside her husband. "We have proof. Carl confessed to everything, including the payments you made to his account."

Eleanor's face twisted into something ugly. "You were never supposed to be born," she spat, looking at me. "You were a mistake. A threat to everything I built. Your mother was a nobody, and your father—" she laughed, a harsh sound. "Your father was too weak to see what you'd do to this family."

Nathaniel stepped forward, his voice low and dangerous. "You stole my daughter. You took five years of her life. You will rot in prison for this."

Eleanor stood, her composure cracking. "You think you can do anything to me? I'm your mother."

"And I'm your victim," I said, stepping out from behind Nathaniel. My legs were shaking, but I held her gaze. "You told me to stay quiet. You told me if I was good, I'd see my mommy again. But you never let me see her, did you? You threw me away like I was nothing."

Eleanor's mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. For the first time, she looked afraid.

The front door swung open, and officers filed in, led by the detective from the station. "Eleanor Thorne, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping," he announced, reading her rights as he snapped handcuffs on her wrists.

She didn't fight. She just stared at me with those cold eyes, and I watched her be led away. The weight of five years lifted off my chest, and I felt the tears come, hot and unstoppable.

Genevieve knelt beside me, pulling me into a hug. "It's over," she whispered. "You're safe now."

Nathaniel wrapped his arms around both of us, and for the first time, I let myself believe it was true.

But as we walked out of the manor, I looked back at the portraits on the walls. Eleanor's face was still there, frozen in time. I knew I'd carry the scars of those years, but I also knew I had something she'd never have: a family that chose me, loved me, and fought for me.

"What happens now?" I asked, my voice small.

Nathaniel smiled, a real smile that reached his eyes. "Now we go home. We make pancakes, we watch bad movies, and we build a life. All the time we lost—we'll make up for it."

Genevieve squeezed my hand. "And you'll never have to be quiet again."

I looked up at the sky, bright and blue, and let out a breath I didn't know I'd been holding. For the first time in five years, I was home.
